Trenton Board of Education in Opposition to the Proposed Cannabis Dispensary Near the YMCA
The Trenton Board of Education expresses its strong concern and opposition to the proposed cannabis dispensary on 359 Pennington Avenue near the YMCA at 431 Pennington Avenue which houses one of the district’s preschools. As an institution dedicated to the safety, well-being, and educational development of our students, we believe that locating a cannabis dispensary in such proximity to a facility that serves children and families is not in the best interest of our community.
The YMCA plays a vital role in providing recreational, educational, and support services to the youth and families of Trenton. We are deeply concerned that a dispensary nearby could normalize cannabis use among young people and create an environment that undermines the goals of fostering healthy, safe, and supportive spaces for youth development.
We understand the importance of ensuring responsible cannabis distribution. Still, we urge the city to carefully consider the long-term implications of placing such a business near institutions central to young people’s growth and well-being. The proximity to the YMCA presents potential risks, including increased exposure to a substance that is still illegal for minors and the potential for creating an environment that could diminish the overall safety and stability of the surrounding area.
The Trenton Board of Education is committed to advocating for policies that support the positive development of our youth and the overall health of our community. We call upon city leaders to prioritize the interests of our children and families in making decisions about the placement of cannabis dispensaries, particularly those near spaces that are dedicated to child and youth services.
We hope the city will take these concerns seriously and re-evaluate the proposed location of the dispensary to ensure the safety and well-being of all Trenton residents, particularly our most vulnerable populations.
